Geocryological and hydrogeological conditions have been assessed at Kupol deposit. The deposit area was conventionally subdivided into two zones by the depth: the perennially frozen rock layer totally widespread in the region, and the rocks below the permafrost foot, in which the most mining operations are currently undertaken. The main problems to be studied in future have been highlighted for each zone. The earlier-obtained results on cryopeg manifestation in the permafrost massif have been analyzed. Further investigation will be conducted taking into account the cryopeg impact on reinforcing structures of various types. Mining works are carried out in the zone of underpermafrost aquifer development. The chemical composition and influence of underpermafrost water on the stability of reinforcing structures in mine workings was studied. The aggressiveness of groundwater in relation to the reinforcing units was revealed. Corrosion of metal supporting elements and their partial destruction caused by the presence of psychrophile microorganisms coming with groundwater that provide nutrient and energy substrates for microbiota is recorded everywhere.

Key words: geocryological and hydrogeological conditions, permafrost deposits, reinforcing support, cryopegs, groundwater, corrosion, psychrophiles
