Frost heave is of great significance, since it causes failures of engineering structures, railways and roads. Despite of active economic development in the European Russia, frost heave is relatively poor studied there, especially in its southeastern part. For the first time, ground temperatures, seasonal freezing, frost heave, water content in soil were monitored for the winter season at more than 10 sites along the Moscow–Kazan section of the “Moscow–Kazan–Yekaterinburg” projected high-speed railway. It has been shown that the region is distinguished by some special features including frost heaving manifested in fine sand. The temperature of soils in the region varies from –4.6°С to 14.2°С during the year, the average annual ground temperature from 4.1°С to 6.3°С, and the depth of seasonal freezing from 17 to 90 cm. Frost heave value changes from 0.026 (in sand) to 0.051 (in loam).

Key words: seasonally frozen layer, frost heaving, engineering survey
