The paper deals with the geological aspects upon the creation of subsurface part of the building upon the reconstruction of Bolshoi Theater. It is shown that the changes in the building foundation were of a very wide scale. Engineering geological conditions are characterized at the reconstruction site and the possible manifestation of karst and suffusion processes is proved to be the principle geological hazard. The project decisions for the subsurface part of the theater building made on the basis of scientific assessment of engineering geological conditions at the construction site, permitted planners to eliminate the karst and suffosion hazard for the theater building under reconstruction. The construction pit and the enclosing wall-in-trench were projected taking into account the depth of weakly permeable clay layer occurrence. The geological structure of the reconstruction site was studied in detail at different levels of subsurface development under the building.

Key words: Bolshoi Theater reconstruction, engineering geological conditions, geotechnogenic massif, wall-intrench technique, karst and suffosion
